Keep Your Chain Sweet – Why Chain Care Matters in NZ

Your bike’s chain is one of the most important parts when it comes to a smooth, safe ride. At JR Motorcycles, we know proper chain care means better power transfer, improved fuel efficiency, and longer life for your sprockets.

Neglect it, and you could be dealing with poor performance, premature wear — or even a snapped chain. Not something any Kiwi rider wants, especially with the kinds of roads we ride here in New Zealand.

Why Chain Maintenance Matters

Smoother rides – Less friction means better acceleration
Longer lifespan – Helps protect your chain and sprockets
Stay safe – A loose or damaged chain can fail without warning
Better fuel economy – A clean, well-lubed chain runs more efficiently

NZ-Friendly Maintenance Schedule

With New Zealand’s mix of coastal roads, gravel backroads, and unpredictable weather, we recommend:

  • Clean and lube every 500 km, or after riding in the wet or on dirt

  • Check tension every 1,000 km

  • Inspect monthly for rust, wear, or tight spots

Step-by-Step Chain Care Guide

1. Cleaning (Best After a Ride – When It’s Warm)

What You’ll Need:

  • Chain cleaner or kerosene

  • A soft brush (an old toothbrush works a treat)

  • Microfibre cloth

How To Do It:

  • Pop your bike on a stand (we’ve got paddock stands in stock if you need one)

  • Spray the cleaner while slowly turning the wheel

  • Gently scrub between the links

  • Wipe completely dry before applying lube

Kiwi Tip: Avoid high-pressure washers — they can force water into your chain’s seals and do more harm than good.

2. Lubrication (Choose the Right Type)

For NZ Conditions:

  • Dry summer rides: Go for a wax-based lube to avoid attracting dust

  • Wet winter roads: Use a stickier, wet-weather formula for lasting protection

How To Apply:

  • Spray onto the inside of the chain while slowly rotating the wheel

  • Let it sit for 10 minutes

  • Wipe off any excess to avoid fling

3. Tension Adjustment

Typical slack range: 20–30mm up/down (always check your bike’s manual)
Check the tightest point on the chain when rotating the wheel

Adjusting the Chain:

  • Loosen the rear axle nut

  • Turn the adjusters evenly on both sides (watch those alignment marks)

  • Re-tighten everything and double-check tension
